What this chapter is about
In previous chapters, we learned to describe motion quantitatively using displacement, velocity, and acceleration. Yet we never addressed the fundamental question: what causes motion? Why does an object at rest remain at rest? Why does moving object continue moving? What determines how quickly an object accelerates? Newton's laws of motion answer these questions by connecting forces to motion. These three laws, published in 1687, form the foundation of classical mechanics and have proven remarkably powerful for explaining everyday phenomena from falling objects to orbiting planets. Understanding forces and Newton's laws enables us to predict and control motion. This chapter develops the concept of force, presents Newton's three laws, and explores applications of these laws.
