What this chapter is about
We live in an age of information. Every day, we encounter numbers and facts — exam scores, temperatures, cricket batting averages, population data, sales figures. The study of how to collect, organize, represent, and interpret this numerical information is called Data Handling or Statistics.
The word "data" comes from the Latin word meaning "given." Data are the raw facts and figures collected for a specific purpose. Once collected, data needs to be organized and summarized in a meaningful way so that patterns, trends, and conclusions can be identified. The key tools for this are measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode), and data representation methods like bar graphs, double bar graphs, pie charts, and probability.
